Argosarchus horridus

The New Zealand giant stick insect, also known as Argosarchus horridus, is a unique species that is endemic to New Zealand. They are also the largest species of stick insect in Aotearoa and they can exceed 20cm in length. They primarily feed on Muehlenbeckia, although they will also eat garden plants including raspberries and roses. They use their fantastic camouflage to hide from predators. Some populations are parthenogenetic, meaning females can produce fertile eggs without any contribution from males.

As a master of disguise, the New Zealand giant stick insect is an excellent candidate for the 2025 Bug of the Year, highlighting the unique and diverse insect fauna of New Zealand.
