Arthurdendyus triangulatus
This is our first flatworm nominee. It’s also a large and impressive hunter of earthworms. And it may not be the nicest reason, but this species has managed to invade Europe after so many European species have invaded here.
The New Zealand flatworm (Arthurdendyus triangulatus) is a large land flatworm native to New Zealand. It is around 5 mm long after hatching, while adults can reach to around 17 cm in length. The ventral surface of the flatworm is a pale buff colour while the upper surface is dark brown. Young flatworms vary in colour from white to pale orange and develop their adult colouration as they grow.
These animals are nocturnal. By day, they usually hide under logs and stones resting on the ground. They may also be found in the soil as they hunt for earthworms.
New Zealand is home to many invasive species from Europe, but this is a rare case where a New Zealand species has invaded Europe. It has had an impact on local earthworms there, which has led to poorer quality soils as a result.
